         HSDAA Championships
As an independent organization with its own registry and a mission of preserving, protecting, and responsibly promoting the Havana Silk Dog, the HSDAA awards both Certified Championships and Companion Dog Championships to both encourage and reward the pursuit of excellence in individual breeding programs.

And yes, the "Companion Dog Championship concept" appears unique to the HSDAA, which is unfortunate. Why unfortunate?
Because it is based on the understanding that the true measure of a breed's overall condition is rarely if ever determined by the quality of its show dogs, but rather by the quality of the much larger number of companion dogs being produced and placed in pet homes each year. Assessing breed type and soundness in these animals, and rewarding breeders for producing consistent quality in their companions as well as their show stock, should be a priority for every breed.
Besides, exhibiting a nice dog under a system devoid of the cutthroat "last-dog-defeated" competition of the modern American dog show can be a rewarding weekend hobby and a lot of fun, and the HSDAA sees no earthly reason to limit that fun to breeders, and only those non-breeders willing to keep their dogs intact until they've finished their championships, which can frankly be a pain in the neck.

HSDAA-registered dogs between six months and two years of age may obtain Jr. Championships in both categories upon accumulation of the required 15 points, but must earn at least two majors under two additional judges after they turn two years of age in order to become HSDAA Champions of Record.
Under the HSDAA system, dogs accumulate championship points not by merely having been determined to be "the best dog entered on the day" ( a method which unfortunately allows for the rewarding of mediocrity), but as a positive result of the individual evaluation of each dog against the standard itself.
Each dog entered receives a written evaluation by the judge on a standardized form, and all dogs receiving a qualifying score on the day are granted a pre-assigned number of points toward their respective championships based upon their individual scores. (Under this system, a judge may, in a single class displaying unusual depth of quality, find multiple dogs worthy of major championship points and award them as he find them, with no consideration as to gender.)

Placement ribbons are awarded for each class after the class is moved together in the usual manner, and class winners are subsequently eligible to compete for Best of Breed, and Best of Opposite Sex, with Awards of Merit and other special awards (such as Best Puppy) as may be offered at the discretion of the Show-giving Club.

The Rules and Procedures for HSDAA championships are included below.

                        HSDAA Championship Rules and Procedures
                                         Effective August 16, 2007

HSDAA awards 4 types of championships-
  1. Junior Certified Champion-  awarded to dogs under two years of age with HSDAA Provisional Certified registration
  2. Certified Champion- awarded to dogs and bitches over two years of age with HSDAA Certified Registration
  3. Junior Companion Dog Champion- awarded to spayed/neutered dogs under two years of age with HSDAA Companion Dog registration
  4. Companion Dog Champion - awarded to spayed/neutered dogs over two years of age with HSDAA Companion Dog registration

Each individual HSDAA Championship for which a dog is eligible shall be awarded upon the accumulation of 15 points, under at least three judges, and at least 2 of which shall be major points.

  • “Point cards” shall be awarded at an HSDAA show based upon each individual dog’s conformation to the standard and judges shall fill out a written critique for each entry. There is no limit on the number of point cards which may be awarded at any show or in any class.
  • Judges shall rate each dog in 12 areas of breed type and soundness as “Excellent”, “Good” or “Needs Improvement”, along with written comments, on a standardized form.
  • Points awarded to each individual dog at a show shall be based the number of “Excellent” and “Good” ratings recorded on the dog’s critique as follows:

A 5-point card shall be awarded to a dog receiving all “Excellent”

              ratings (Major)

A 4-point card shall be awarded to each dog receiving at least 9

“Excellent” ratings, with the remainder rated “Good”. (Major)

A 3-point  card shall be awarded each dog receiving at least 6

“Excellent” ratings, with no more than 1 N.I. (Major)

A 2-point card shall be awarded to each dog receiving at least 3

“Excellent” ratings, with no more than 2 N.I. ratings.

A 1-point card shall be awarded to each dog receiving at least 1

“Excellent” rating, with no more than 3 N.I. ratings.

  • Classes at all shows shall be divided by sex and age, as well as Certified and Companion.
  • Class ribbons shall be awarded, and first-place winners in each class shall compete together for Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed. (Point cards are awarded independent of class placements and may exceed the number of placements awarded)
  • Winners of Best of Breed and Best of Opposite shall receive an extra 3 championship points at each show where there are at least 5 dogs competing in the Winners class. (Eligible BOB and BOS winners will receive a card with award and date noted, in addition to the point card awarded during the classes.)
  • HSDAA Champions of Record are automatically eligible to compete in the Winners class at all HSDAA shows.
  • Dogs awarded Junior Certified Championships may be awarded Certified Championships once they have met the requirements for Certification at two years of age, upon the accumulation of at least two additional “major” cards under two additional judges.
  • Junior Companion Dogs may be awarded Companion Dog championships after the age of two under the same rules, except that they are exempt from the Certification requirement.
  • In order for championships to be recorded and championship certificates to be issued, point cards reflecting the necessary 15 points must be submitted by the owner to HSDAA Show Records – championships will not be automatically issued.

HSDAA SHOW PROCEDURES

Exhibitors must pre-register (premium lists and entry forms will be available on the website) by the closing date listed. At the club's discretion, day of show entries may be accepted but those dogs, of course, will not be listed in the catalog.

Exhibitors are expected to be ringside prior to the start of judging to pick up armbands.

Classes will be called in catalogue order, and standard ring procedure will be followed.

Judges will fill out a written report on each entry during the individual examination. Point cards will be awarded at the end of each class based on the judges' score.

Class placements and ribbons will be awarded at the end of each class.

First place winners from each class, as well as HSDAA Champions of Record, are eligible to compete in the Winners class, where Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex are awarded, along with any other special awards offered at the discretion of the show-giving Club (such as Best Puppy, Best Companion Dog, etc.) although only BOB and BOS will receive “bonus” point cards.

Puppies and adults entered in the Companion Dog classes (as well as Veteran, Stud Dog, Brood Bitch, and Foundation Dog classes when offered) may be shown in pet clip, but should carry sufficient coat to evaluate.
